Hopefully that's enough background for now. ![]() My instructor has 'limited' my selection to anything by Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley, Stanley Turrentine, or Sonny Stitt. I even was supposed to have a lesson about identify the DIRECTION of the intervals.įor our jazz juries, I will be required to transcribe a solo, and perform it from memory with the recording (in addition to our tunes). As an example, I'm not even comfortable nailing many basic intervals within an octave. So, now that I'm in college, it's caused me to nearly fail music theory II, and made Improvisation class a disaster, despite having excellent written scores. In the past, I've gotten through high school and lessons solely based on my relatively strong knowledge of theory ie: in my limited playing where I had to learn things from ear, it was really simple, or it was "if it's not going up from this note, it's got to be _" which doesn't seem to really be working my ear. One of the things that has become a real thorn in my side is my ear. I'm trying to address many of these issues in my playing this summer. In my ignorant youth, there are a few things that have never stuck. ![]() I've had the pleasure of going to a lot of jazz workshops, and picked a lot of great players/teachers minds in the past.
